Everything You Need to Know About How to Elope in Zion National Park
With towering red cliffs, winding canyon roads, dramatic desert landscapes, and some of the most iconic scenery in the Southwest, it’s easy to see why Zion National Park has become one of the most popular places to elope in the United States.
Whether you’re dreaming of exchanging vows surrounded by sandstone cliffs, hiking to a scenic overlook at sunrise, or celebrating with pie and ice cream in Springdale afterward, Zion offers a little bit of everything. As an elopement photographer, I love Zion because it allows couples to create a wedding day that feels intentional and relaxed. You can spend the day exploring together rather than rushing between events, and the scenery does most of the work.

Best Places to Elope in Zion National Park
Few places feel as dramatic as Zion. Towering sandstone cliffs, winding canyons, cottonwood trees, and glowing red rock create a landscape that feels almost unreal. Whether you’re dreaming of exchanging vows beneath massive canyon walls or hiking to an overlook for sunset portraits, Zion offers some of the most iconic scenery in the Southwest.
One thing many couples don’t realize is that ceremonies inside Zion National Park are only allowed in specific approved locations and require a Special Use Permit. The permit currently costs $100 and should be submitted at least three weeks before your elopement date.
Here are some of my favorite places to consider for your Zion elopement.
Temple of Sinawava
If you picture towering canyon walls surrounding your ceremony, Temple of Sinawava is hard to beat. Located at the end of Zion Canyon Scenic Drive, this location feels tucked away from the busiest areas of the park while still being easily accessible.
The massive sandstone cliffs provide shade for much of the day, making it one of the best ceremony locations for softer light and warmer summer temperatures. It’s also one of the most iconic ceremony sites approved by the National Park Service.
Best for: Couples wanting the classic Zion canyon experience.
Menu Falls
For a ceremony location that feels more secluded and intimate, Menu Falls is one of Zion’s hidden gems. This small waterfall and wooden platform create a completely different atmosphere from Zion’s red rock overlooks.
The combination of water, greenery, and sandstone makes it feel surprisingly lush for the desert. Because of its smaller capacity, it works especially well for true elopements and micro weddings.
Best for: Couples wanting a quieter ceremony surrounded by nature.
Zion Lodge Lawn
Zion Lodge Lawn offers one of the easiest ceremony locations for couples bringing family and friends. Surrounded by cottonwood trees and towering cliffs, it provides beautiful views without requiring guests to hike.
Its central location inside the park also makes it convenient for exploring multiple portrait locations afterward.
Best for: Elopements and intimate weddings with guests.
Nature Center Lawn
Nature Center Lawn combines incredible canyon views with easy accessibility. Depending on the season, it can be one of the most convenient ceremony locations in Zion while still feeling immersed in the landscape.
The surrounding cliffs create an incredible backdrop for vows while offering plenty of space for small groups.
Best for: Couples wanting stunning views without much walking.
Timber Creek Overlook
Located in the Kolob Canyons section of Zion, Timber Creek Overlook feels completely different from the main canyon. Instead of being surrounded by towering walls, you’ll find sweeping views stretching across layers of red rock and distant mountains.
This location is especially beautiful at sunrise and tends to see fewer visitors than the main canyon. It’s also the only overlook location approved for ceremonies within Zion National Park.
Best for: Couples dreaming of expansive overlook views.
Canyon Overlook Trail (Portrait Location)
While ceremonies aren’t permitted here, Canyon Overlook remains one of my favorite locations for portraits. The short hike leads to one of the most iconic views in Zion, making it perfect for sunrise, sunset, or post-ceremony adventures.
Best for: Epic elopement portraits.
Hidden Gems Near Zion National Park
Some of my favorite Southern Utah locations are actually found outside of Zion National Park. While Zion’s iconic cliffs and canyons draw visitors from around the world, the surrounding areas offer incredible desert landscapes, dramatic overlooks, hidden slot canyons, and quiet locations that often provide more privacy and flexibility for your elopement day.
From the pink dunes of Coral Pink Sand Dunes to the red rock vistas around Kanab and the lesser-known corners of Kolob Terrace Road, there are countless places to explore beyond the park’s boundaries. These locations can be perfect for couples looking to avoid crowds, bring their dogs along, or create a more personalized experience while still enjoying the beauty that makes Southern Utah so special.
