Why Elope in Moab?

Red rock arches, winding canyons, dramatic overlooks, and some of the most iconic desert landscapes in the American Southwest make Moab one of the best places in the United States to elope. Whether you’re dreaming of exchanging vows beneath towering sandstone formations, exploring hidden desert trails, or watching the sunrise over endless red rock mesas, Moab offers an unforgettable setting for an intentional wedding experience.

One of the things couples love most about Moab is the variety. Within a short drive, you can experience two national parks, countless public land locations, scenic river overlooks, and remote desert landscapes. Unlike many adventure destinations, you don’t need to hike miles into the backcountry to find incredible views. Many of the area’s most stunning locations are accessible by vehicle or short walks, making it easy to create a day that feels adventurous without being physically overwhelming.

Moab is also ideal for couples who want flexibility. Whether you’re planning a simple ceremony with breathtaking views or an all-day experience filled with hiking, Jeep tours, stargazing, and desert exploration, there are endless ways to make the day your own.

This guide covers everything you need to know about planning a Moab elopement, including permits, marriage licenses, locations, timing, and costs.

Where is Moab, Utah?

Moab is located in southeastern Utah and serves as the gateway to both Arches National Park and Canyonlands National Park.

The closest airport is Canyonlands Regional Airport, located about 20 minutes north of town. Many couples also fly into Salt Lake City or Grand Junction, Colorado, and make the scenic drive to Moab.

Because of its location, Moab makes an excellent destination for couples wanting to combine their elopement with a road trip through Utah’s iconic Mighty 5 national parks.

Marriage Licenses for a Moab Elopement

Utah requires couples to obtain a marriage license before their ceremony, and the process is fairly straightforward.

Marriage licenses can be obtained from any county clerk’s office in Utah, including the Grand County Clerk’s Office in Moab. Both partners typically need to be present and provide valid identification. There is no residency requirement, so you do not need to live in Utah to get married there.

Utah also has no waiting period, meaning you can legally marry as soon as your license is issued. Marriage licenses are generally valid for 32 days, so be sure to plan accordingly if you’re traveling from out of state.

Unlike Colorado, Utah requires an officiant to perform your ceremony, and you’ll need two witnesses to sign the license afterward. If you’re planning an intimate elopement with just the two of you, don’t worry. I can help you navigate the logistics and make sure everything is in place before your wedding day.

Scenic Overlooks & Hidden Gems

Over the years, I’ve found countless locations throughout the Moab area that don’t appear in travel guides.

From remote overlooks accessed by rugged jeep trails to hidden slot canyons and scenic backcountry hikes, these lesser-known locations offer incredible scenery with fewer crowds, making them ideal for couples who want a more intimate and adventurous experience.

When you work with me, I help you find locations that fit your vision, priorities, and comfort level. Whether that means a short walk to a stunning viewpoint or a more adventurous journey into the desert.

Activities to Make Your Day an Experience

One of the best parts about eloping in Moab is the freedom to build a day around experiences rather than a schedule. Whether you’re looking for adventure, quiet moments together, or a little of both, there are countless ways to make your day feel uniquely yours.

  • Sunrise or Sunset Hikes – Explore scenic trails among towering red rock formations while taking in some of the most beautiful light of the day.
  • Jeep or UTV Adventures – Venture down rugged desert roads to reach remote overlooks, hidden canyons, and viewpoints far from the crowds.
  • Picnics with a View – Slow down and enjoy a meal together surrounded by Moab’s dramatic desert landscape, whether it’s a simple picnic or a catered setup.
  • Stargazing Under Dark Skies – The Moab area is known for its incredible night skies. On clear nights, you can often see the Milky Way stretching across the horizon, creating a memorable way to end your wedding day.
  • River Activities – The Colorado River offers opportunities for rafting, kayaking, paddleboarding, or simply enjoying the water on a warm desert day.
  • Helicopter Tours – Take in the scale of the canyons, arches, and red rock landscape from above for a truly unforgettable experience.

The beauty of an elopement is that there are no rules. Your day can be as adventurous or as relaxed as you want it to be.

Best time for a Moab elopement

  • Spring (March-May) One of the most popular seasons thanks to comfortable temperatures and ideal hiking conditions.
  • Summer (June-August) Very hot, often exceeding 100 degrees. Sunrise and sunset become essential during this time of year. I often don’t recommend eloping this time of year for your comfort.
  • Fall (September-November) Another excellent season with cooler temperatures and beautiful desert light.
  • Winter (December-February) Fewer visitors, mild daytime temperatures, and occasional snow creating stunning contrasts against the red rock landscape.

Tips for eloping in Moab

  • Plan around sunrise or sunset whenever possible.
  • Bring significantly more water than you think you’ll need.
  • Expect dusty conditions and pack accordingly.
  • Build flexibility into your timeline.
  • Consider spending multiple days in the area if your schedule allows.
  • Respect the desert environment and follow Leave No Trace principles throughout your experience.

Leave No Trace In Moab & Surrounding Areas

The landscapes found throughout Moab may look rugged and resilient, but they’re surprisingly fragile. Following Leave No Trace principles means staying on designated trails and durable surfaces, respecting wildlife, packing out everything you bring in, and avoiding decorations or activities that could damage the environment.

Like many desert environments in the Southwest, Moab contains cryptobiotic soil, a living ecosystem that helps prevent erosion and supports plant life. Once damaged, it can take decades or even centuries to recover.

When you work with me, Leave No Trace principles are incorporated into every aspect of the planning process so you can have an incredible experience while helping preserve these landscapes for future generations.
