How to Plan a San Juan Mountains Elopement

Even if you’ve been dreaming of a big wedding, there’s something undeniably magical about slipping away into the mountains to say “I do.” A lot of couples immediately think of places closer to Denver– like Breckenridge, Colorado Springs, or Rocky Mountain National Park–but the San Juan Mountains in southwest Colorado are truly one of the state’s best-kept secrets.

They also happen to be one of my personal favorites. I’ve visited the San Juans many times over the years, and every trip leaves me in awe–from rugged peaks and hidden waterfalls to alpine lakes and the charm of old mining towns. It’s a place that feels made for unforgettable elopements.

Whether you’re envisioning sunrise vows with just the two of you or a day packed with hiking, hot springs, and champagne at sunset, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know about planning your San Juan Mountain elopement.

Why Choose the San Juans for Your Elopement?

Known as the “Switzerland of America,” the San Juan Mountains are some of the most dramatic peaks in Colorado. Unlike the more touristy spots around Denver or Rocky Mountain National Park, this corner of southwest Colorado still feels remote and untouched. You’ll find yourself surrounded by jagged peaks, wildflower meadows, and historic mountain towns like Silverton, Ouray, and Telluride.

Here are just a few reasons couples choose to elope here:

  • No Permits Needed – One of the best parts about eloping in the San Juan Mountains is how easy it is. Most small ceremonies here don’t require a permit, unless you’re bringing a larger group, setting up decor, or using busy trails. For most intimate elopements, you’re free to just show up and say your vows.
  • Privacy + Seclusion – It’s intimacy, flexibility, and adventure all rolled into one–giving you full control over how your wedding day unfolds.
  • Variety of Landscapes – Waterfalls, alpine lakes, hot springs, and 14,000-foot peaks.
  • Adventure at Every Turn – Jeep passes, backcountry hikes, or scenic overlooks right off the road.
  • Year-Round Beauty – Golden aspens in the fall, wildflowers in summer, snowy peaks in winter.

Marriage License Process for a San Juan Mountain Wedding

Getting married in the San Juan Mountains is not only gorgeous but also simple. Colorado makes the process easy–you don’t need an officiant and can even self-solemnize your marriage. You’ll just need to stop by a county clerk’s office, like in Ouray, Silverton, Denver, Durango, or Telluride, to pick up your license, and it can be used anywhere in the state. Once your ceremony is over, you’ll return the signed license to the same county. This flexibility gives couples the freedom to plan a celebration in the San Juans that feels adventurous, intimate, and true to them.

You can find more details on the Ouray County website.

Best Time of Year to Elope in the San Juans

  • Summer (June–August): Rushing waterfalls, wildflowers, crystal-clear alpine lakes, and long days. Be prepared for afternoon storms.
  • Fall (September–October): Golden aspens, crisp air, and fewer crowds.
  • Winter (November–March): A snowy wonderland, perfect for skiing or cozy cabin vows.
  • Spring (April–May): Trails and passes are mostly closed, the ground is muddy with lingering snow, and very little has bloomed yet. While crowds are low, many businesses also shut down or limit hours.

Top Elopement Locations

  • Island and Ice Lakes: A challenging hike with turquoise waters as your reward.
  • Yankee Boy Basin: Wildflowers and mountain views in every direction.
  • Telluride Overlooks: Accessible views with gondolas and charming town vibes.
  • Hidden Waterfalls near Silverton: A private, magical setting for vows.
  • Ouray Hot Springs: A romantic way to end your day–just you two soaking it all in.
  • Lesser-Known Spots I’ve Scouted – Over the years, I’ve found secret overlooks, quiet trails, and intimate corners of the mountains that aren’t on any blog list. Choosing me as your photographer means I’ll help you find those hidden gems to make your day feel even more personal.

Elopement Activities in the San Juan Mountains

One of the best parts about eloping in the San Juans is that your day can be so much more than just the ceremony. You get to design an experience that reflects who you are as a couple–whether that’s chasing adrenaline or keeping it slow and intentional. Here are some activity ideas to weave into your day:

  • Off-Road Jeep Tour – Explore iconic 4×4 trails like Yankee Boy Basin or Engineer Pass for jaw-dropping views without a long hike.
  • Picnic with a View – Pack your favorite snacks, a blanket, and champagne for a cozy mid-day break overlooking the peaks.
  • Take the Telluride Gondola – Ride up for sunset views and end your evening with dinner in town.
  • Go Stargazing – With almost no light pollution, the San Juans offer some of the best night skies in Colorado.
  • Write Letters to Each Other – Pause during your day to exchange hand-written notes that you’ll keep forever.
  • Include Your Pup – Many trails are dog-friendly, so bring your furry friend along for the adventure.
  • Camp or Stay in a Cabin – Extend your celebration into a whole weekend surrounded by mountain beauty.

Your elopement can be as adventurous or laid-back as you want. The San Juans give you endless opportunities to make it yours.

Your story deserves to be remembered exactly as it felt–not just posed photos, but the real, joy-filled moments in between. I photograph elopements with a mix of digital, 35mm film, and Super 8 video, so you’ll get that nostalgic, timeless feel woven into your gallery.
