Oregon Coast Elopement Guide

Tuesday, June 30th, 2026

If you’ve ever dreamed of exchanging vows with crashing waves behind you, rugged sea stacks stretching into the ocean, and mist rolling over dramatic cliffs, an Oregon Coast elopement might be exactly what you’re looking for.

The Oregon Coast offers one of the most diverse landscapes in the country. In a single day, you can explore secluded beaches, hike through old-growth forests, stand on towering cliffs, and watch the sun disappear into the Pacific Ocean. Whether you’re planning an adventurous hiking elopement or a relaxed beach ceremony with your closest family, the Oregon Coast has a location that fits your vision.

As an Oregon Coast elopement photographer, I help couples create intentional wedding days that feel like an adventure instead of a schedule. This guide covers everything you need to know to start planning.

How to Get Married on the Oregon Coast

Planning an Oregon Coast elopement is easier than most couples expect. Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to help you get started.

1. Choose Your Elopement Location

The Oregon Coast offers everything from iconic beaches and sea stacks to dramatic cliffs and coastal forests. Whether you’re dreaming of Cannon Beach, Samuel H. Boardman, Cape Kiwanda, or somewhere completely off the beaten path, choosing the right location is the first step.

1. Choose Your Elopement Location

Not sure where to start? That’s where I come in. I’ll help you narrow down the best locations based on the scenery you love, how much hiking you’re up for, the time of year, privacy, and whether you’re bringing guests.

2. Book Your Photographer

Once you have a general location and timeframe in mind, it’s time to book your photographer. Beyond documenting your day, I’ll help you plan every detail, from creating a personalized timeline and recommending the best ceremony spots to navigating permits, suggesting activities, and sharing trusted local vendor recommendations.

3. Choose Your Wedding Date

Every season on the Oregon Coast has something special to offer. Summer brings the warmest weather, spring and fall offer fewer crowds, and winter creates a dramatic, cozy atmosphere with crashing waves and moody skies. We’ll choose a date that fits the experience you’re envisioning.

4. Get Your Oregon Marriage License

Apply for your Oregon marriage license through any county clerk’s office in the state. Oregon has a three-day waiting period unless it’s waived, so it’s important to plan ahead before your wedding day.

5. Secure Any Required Permits

Depending on where you’re getting married, you may need a Special Use Permit. I’ll help you determine whether your chosen location requires one and guide you through the process if it does.

6. Choose an Officiant

Oregon requires an officiant to perform your ceremony. Many couples have a friend or family member become ordained, while others hire a professional officiant. If you’d like recommendations, I’m happy to connect you with officiants I know and trust.

7. Plan an Adventure You’ll Never Forget

One of the best parts about an Oregon Coast elopement is that your wedding day can be so much more than just the ceremony. Spend the day hiking coastal trails, exploring hidden beaches, watching the sunset from a cliffside overlook, enjoying a picnic by the ocean, or simply slowing down and soaking in the experience together.

By the time your wedding day arrives, all that’s left to do is be fully present, celebrate your marriage, and enjoy one incredible adventure together.

Why Elope on the Oregon Coast?

The Oregon Coast is unlike anywhere else in the United States.

Instead of one long stretch of similar beaches, every section of coastline has its own personality. You’ll find dramatic cliffs, hidden coves, sea caves, waterfalls flowing into the ocean, towering evergreen forests, and miles of sandy beaches.

It’s perfect for couples who love:

  • Dramatic ocean views
  • Hiking and exploring
  • Moody weather
  • Coastal forests
  • Tide pools
  • Sunsets over the Pacific
  • Weekend road trips
  • Relaxed, adventure-filled wedding days

Best Time of Year to Elope on the Oregon Coast

One of my favorite things about the Oregon Coast is that it’s beautiful in every season. Rather than chasing perfect weather, I love embracing whatever the coast gives us. Some days bring dramatic fog rolling over the cliffs, others offer colorful sunsets, crashing waves, or even clear blue skies. Every season creates a completely different experience, and that’s part of what makes an Oregon Coast elopement so unforgettable.

Spring (March through May) brings lush green landscapes, blooming wildflowers, and fewer crowds than summer. You can expect cooler temperatures and occasional rain, but the coastline feels incredibly vibrant this time of year.

Summer (June through August) offers the warmest temperatures and the longest days, making it perfect for couples who want to spend the entire day exploring. It’s also the busiest season, so sunrise or weekday ceremonies are often the best way to enjoy more privacy. Keep in mind that coastal fog is common, especially in the mornings, and can create a beautifully moody atmosphere.

Fall (September through November) is one of my favorite times to photograph elopements on the Oregon Coast. The summer crowds begin to disappear, temperatures remain comfortable, and you’ll often get beautiful golden evening light.

Winter (December through February) is ideal if you love dramatic scenery. Stormy skies, powerful waves, misty beaches, and cozy coastal cabins create an incredibly romantic atmosphere. While you’ll likely encounter rain, the quieter beaches and moody landscapes make winter one of the most magical times to elope.

The weather on the Oregon Coast is famously unpredictable no matter the season, and that’s part of its charm. We always build flexibility into your timeline, keep backup plans in mind, and embrace whatever nature gives us. Some of the most memorable photos happen when the coast shows off its wild side.

Best Oregon Coast Elopement Locations

Cannon Beach

The most iconic destination on the Oregon Coast, Cannon Beach is famous for Haystack Rock, wide sandy beaches, and incredible sunsets. Early mornings offer the most privacy and often feature beautiful coastal fog rolling in from the Pacific.

Best For

  • Families
  • First-time visitors
  • Classic Oregon Coast scenery
  • Sunrise ceremonies

Ecola State Park

Just north of Cannon Beach, Ecola State Park offers the best of both worlds with towering evergreen forests and breathtaking cliffside ocean views. You can easily incorporate short hikes, secluded overlooks, and beach access into your elopement day.

Best For

  • Scenic overlooks
  • Forest and ocean landscapes
  • Hiking
  • Adventurous couples

Hug Point

Hug Point feels like a hidden gem. At low tide, you can explore sea caves, towering cliffs, tide pools, and even a seasonal waterfall that flows directly onto the beach. It offers a little bit of everything the Oregon Coast is known for.

Best For

  • Couples wanting a quieter location
  • Smaller ceremonies
  • Exploring sea caves
  • Waterfalls

Cape Kiwanda

Cape Kiwanda is known for its towering sandstone cliffs, sweeping ocean views, and massive sand dunes overlooking the Pacific. It’s one of the few places on the coast where you can combine beach, cliffs, and dunes into your wedding day.

Best For

  • Dramatic landscapes
  • Sunset ceremonies
  • Sand dunes
  • Adventurous portraits

Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor

Located near Brookings on the southern Oregon Coast, Samuel H. Boardman is one of the most spectacular stretches of coastline in the Pacific Northwest. Natural Bridges, Secret Beach, Arch Rock, and countless viewpoints create endless opportunities for adventure and stunning photos.

Best For

  • Epic coastal views
  • Hiking adventures
  • Smaller, more private ceremonies
  • Couples wanting multiple locations in one day

Cape Perpetua & Thor’s Well

Towering more than 800 feet above the Pacific Ocean, Cape Perpetua offers some of the highest accessible viewpoints on the Oregon Coast. Between dramatic overlooks, coastal forests, and nearby natural attractions like Thor’s Well and Devil’s Churn, it’s perfect for couples wanting a full day of exploring.

Best For

  • Scenic overlooks
  • Cliffside views
  • Coastal hiking
  • Adventure elopements

No matter which section of the Oregon Coast you choose, you’ll find dramatic scenery, incredible sunsets, and endless opportunities to turn your elopement into an unforgettable adventure. One of my favorite parts of helping couples plan here is matching them with a location that fits their vision, guest count, and sense of adventure, whether that’s a quiet beach at sunrise or an all-day road trip exploring multiple stops along the coast.

Do You Need a Permit to Elope on the Oregon Coast?

It depends on where you choose to get married.

Some Oregon State Parks require a Special Use Permit for weddings, while certain beaches managed by local jurisdictions or the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department may have additional rules regarding ceremony size, arches, chairs, amplified music, or commercial photography.

If you’re planning to elope on federal land, such as areas managed by the United States Forest Service, permit requirements can vary by location.

When you book with me, I’ll help determine whether your location requires a permit and guide you through the process.

Where to Stay for an Oregon Coast Elopement?

Whether you’re planning a one-day elopement or turning it into a weekend getaway, the Oregon Coast has plenty of cozy places to stay.

Consider:

Many couples spend several days exploring different sections of the coastline before or after their ceremony.

Oregon Marriage License

You’ll need to obtain an Oregon marriage license before your ceremony.

A few things to know:

  • Both partners generally need to appear in person when applying.
  • Oregon has a three-day waiting period unless it’s waived by the county.
  • The license is typically valid for 60 days.
  • After your ceremony, your officiant and witnesses will complete and return the license.

Always check with the county where you’re applying for the most up-to-date requirements.

Do You Need an Officiant to Elope in Oregon?

Yes.

Oregon requires an officiant to perform the ceremony.

Many couples choose to:

  • Have a close friend or family member become ordained.
  • Hire a local officiant.
  • Keep things simple with a short personalized ceremony.

If you need recommendations, I’m always happy to connect you with officiants I trust.

Activities to Make Your Oregon Coast Wedding Day an Experience

One of the best parts about eloping on the Oregon Coast is that your wedding day can be about so much more than just the ceremony. Instead of following a traditional wedding timeline, you can spend the day exploring together and creating memories in one of the most beautiful places in the Pacific Northwest.

Many couples choose to include:

  • Hiking along the coastline
  • Exploring hidden beaches
  • Watching the sunset over the Pacific Ocean
  • Visiting a lighthouse
  • Tide pooling at low tide
  • Sharing a picnic on the beach
  • Bonfire on the beach (where permitted)
  • Whale watching (seasonal)
  • Surfing or paddleboarding
  • Renting a cozy oceanfront cabin
  • Driving the scenic Pacific Coast Highway
  • Exploring sea caves
  • Visiting nearby waterfalls
  • Stargazing on a clear night
  • Enjoying fresh seafood at a local coastal restaurant
  • Popping champagne overlooking the ocean

Your elopement doesn’t have to fit into a two to four-hour wedding schedule. It can be an entire day, or even a weekend, filled with adventure, quiet moments, and experiences that feel true to your relationship. Those are often the moments you’ll remember just as much as saying “I do.”
